Days in Horta

26 May-2 June

So nice to be at anchor after 17 days at sea. Now the usual starts with scrubbing the boat, fixing what needs to be fixed, and preparing a cabin for Elise. After 2 nights on anchor we get a place in the harbour. We had a bit of a struggle to get the anchor up due to managing to get caught in an old anchor chain from a fishing boat. No photos since we were so focused on getting the chain off from our anchor with the help from a nice neighbour boat.
We have a few days to get the boat in order and socialize with some other sailing friends before Elise arrives and it’s time to cast off and sail to Ireland.

Horta is a pleasant harbor and town. One of the most famous spots for all of us sailors is Peter’s café, which we visited more than once. We definitely found one of the best restaurants we have visited during our entire trip. Unfortunately, the service was not always the best, but it was compensated by the food, which was fantastic.
When Elise arrived, she and I took the opportunity to go on a full-day tour of the island. We were advised to wear long pants and a warm sweater and jacket, a bit silly since we wear T-shirts and shorts all day, but it turned out to be necessary. Already at the first stop, the hoodie went on, and at the second, which was a fantastic crater, the jacket was also needed. We got to go in and see how the whale watchers sit in their huts watching all day. Unfortunately, no whales showed up. Another interesting place was the Lighthouse of Ponto dos Capelihnos, which is now a museum. Loved the stairs in the tower.

Our folding cart has once again helped us transport our food.
ARC Europe is starting to arrive in Horta, so it’s time for us to cast off…just one last thing left to do. Write on the pier that Saphir was here.

Hugs

Eva
